Description
What Is a Prima Inverted Cone Diamond Bur?
The Prima Inverted Cone Diamond Bur has a head that widens from the shank towards its free end. As the bur rotates, the diamond-coated surface removes and shapes hard tooth tissue through abrasion.
Prima’s Inverted Cone range includes models 805 and 807. Differences in head dimensions and length allow the dentist to select an instrument appropriate to the working space and intended preparation.
These are two distinct model codes and should not be confused with 806, which belongs to the separate Inverted Cone With Collar category.
Applications of Inverted Cone Diamond Burs
Inverted cone geometry can be useful during selected stages of cavity preparation, including shaping cavity floors and walls and creating mechanical retention features.
The choice depends on the treatment plan and restorative material. Undercuts are not appropriate for every restoration.
Shaping the Cavity Floor
The end of the bur can be used to shape selected areas of the cavity floor. Contact and material removal depend on the head diameter, head length, grit grade and direction of movement.
Refining Internal Cavity Walls
The lateral surfaces allow cavity walls to be shaped according to the instrument’s geometry. Appropriate sizing and controlled movement are important for limiting removal to the intended area.
Creating Mechanical Retention Where Required
Where the preparation design requires mechanical retention, an inverted cone bur may be selected to create retention features or undercuts. The need for these features and their extent must be determined by the dentist according to the restoration.
Choosing Between Models 805 and 807
Selecting the Head Diameter
The head diameter should be appropriate for the dimensions of the treatment area. For example, the size designation 014 indicates a nominal diameter of 1.4 mm.
The model code, head diameter and grit grade must be considered together when selecting the product.
Considering Head Length
Head length is different from the overall length of the bur. Model 805 has a shorter head, while model 807 features a longer head.
A longer head is not automatically more suitable for every situation. Selection should reflect the available space, intended preparation and operating requirements.
Selecting the Grit Grade
The official product page lists Medium grit for models in this range and Coarse grit for selected 805 options. The exact combination of size and grit should be checked before selection.
Specifications of Models 805 and 807

The listed sizes and grit grades describe the range and do not indicate that every combination is available. Specifications must be checked against the packaging and documentation for the selected version
Use and Maintenance
Before use, confirm shank compatibility with the handpiece, inspect the bur for wear or damage, and check that it is correctly seated and securely retained.
Operating speed, cooling and applied pressure must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements of the procedure.
Cleaning and preparation for reuse must also follow the instructions applicable to the specific product.
