PrimaDental Diamond Burs

A dental bur is a rotary instrument fitted to a turbine, contra-angle or straight handpiece, depending on its shank type. Dental burs are used to cut, prepare, shape and finish tooth structure and restorative materials, including preparing teeth for crowns. Dedicated models are also available for oral surgery.

Rotary polishing instruments, sometimes referred to as “polishing burs”, are used to reduce surface roughness and improve the gloss of teeth and restorations.

Prima Dental Diamond Burs: British Dental Instruments

Choosing the right dental bur influences preparation accuracy, material removal and surface finish. This page introduces the main types of dental burs, the British manufacturer Prima Dental, and the features and applications of its diamond bur range.

What Is a Dental Bur and What Is It Used For?

A dental bur is a rotary instrument fitted to a turbine, contra-angle or straight handpiece, depending on its shank type. Dental burs are used to cut, prepare, shape and finish tooth structure and restorative materials, including preparing teeth for crowns. Dedicated models are also available for oral surgery.

Rotary polishing instruments, sometimes referred to as “polishing burs”, are used to reduce surface roughness and improve the gloss of teeth and restorations.

Types of Dental Burs and Rotary Instruments

Dental burs and rotary instruments can be classified by the material of their working part and their intended application. The main groups include:

– Carbide burs: These have tungsten carbide cutting heads. Depending on their design, they are used to prepare tooth structure, cut certain metals and restorative materials, or finish restorations.

– Diamond burs: These have diamond-coated working surfaces and use abrasive action to prepare tooth structure and adjust certain restorative materials.

– Steel burs: Usually made from hardened steel, suitable models are used to remove carious dentine and perform selected stages of cavity preparation.

– Finishing and polishing instruments: Finishing burs refine contours and reduce irregularities, while abrasive polishers further smooth surfaces and improve gloss.

Finishing and polishing instruments are grouped by application, so this category overlaps with classifications based on material.

About Prima Dental

Prima Dental is a British manufacturer of dental instruments based in Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England. Its heritage in dental manufacturing dates back approximately 150 years, and its products are supplied to more than 90 countries. The product range presented in its catalogue includes diamond, carbide and steel burs, Prima Illume polishing instruments and dental mirrors.

Prima Dental Diamond Burs

Prima Classic diamond burs are manufactured with stainless steel shanks and natural diamond grit. According to the manufacturer, the diamond coating is applied under controlled conditions specific to each bur design, supporting even distribution and secure retention of the diamond particles.

Precision engineering is used to maintain concentricity and balance, helping to minimise vibration. These manufacturing features support consistent abrasive performance and durability during use.

Depending on their shape and grit grade, diamond burs are used for enamel and dentine preparation, crown and veneer preparation, contouring and surface finishing. The wider Prima diamond range also includes dedicated models for materials such as zirconia.

Types of Prima Dental Diamond Burs

Prima Dental presents its diamond burs in two main groups:

– Operative — Prima Classic: Includes round, inverted cone, pear, cylindrical, tapered, flame, needle, wheel and football-shaped burs for different preparation and contouring tasks. Depth markers, micro-restorative burs and short-shank models are also included in this range.

– Predator: Includes diamond burs for specific applications, such as Predator Zirconia Diamonds for zirconia restorations and Endo Predator for endodontic access preparation. Each model should be selected according to its stated indication.

How to Choose the Right Diamond Bur

Prima diamond burs are available in various head shapes, diameters, lengths and grit grades. Available combinations differ between models, so selection should be based on the specifications of the individual product.

The main selection criteria are:

– Head shape and diameter: These should suit the intended preparation, the dimensions of the treatment area and the amount of material to be removed.

– Head length and overall length: These should provide appropriate access to the working area.

– Grit grade: Coarse and extra-coarse burs are generally used for greater material removal, while fine and extra-fine burs are used for finer adjustments and reducing surface roughness. Finishing with a fine diamond bur does not replace the complete polishing sequence required for the material.

– Material being treated: Materials such as zirconia require a bur specifically indicated for that application.

– Shank type: The bur must be compatible with the turbine or contra-angle being used.

For example, Prima round diamond burs are available in several diameters, while flame-shaped models offer different combinations of head length, diameter and grit grade. Not every size is available in every grit.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for operating speed, applied pressure and cooling requirements.
