Description
What Is a Zirconia Polisher and How Does It Work?
A zirconia polisher is a rotary abrasive instrument used to refine and polish zirconia restoration surfaces. Contact between the working section and the restoration helps reduce irregularities and improve the surface finish.
In a multi-step system, instruments with different grit grades are used to progress from initial refinement to finer polishing. Results depend on the initial surface condition, zirconia material, instrument selection and operating technique.
Stages of the Prima Zirconia Polishing System
Step 1: Reveal — Extra Coarse Grit
Reveal features Extra Coarse grit and is intended for the initial stage of the finishing sequence. The amount of surface adjustment required should be assessed before use to avoid unnecessary material removal.
Step 2: Polish — Medium Grit
Polish, with Medium grit, is the intermediate stage. It continues surface refinement and helps reduce marks left by the preceding stage.
Step 3: Shine — Fine Grit
Shine features Fine grit for finer polishing and improved surface gloss. The final finish depends on the restoration’s condition and adherence to the recommended sequence and operating conditions.
Applications of the Three-Step Zirconia Polisher
Surface Finishing After Restoration Adjustment
Following adjustments to restoration contours or contacts, the surface may require finishing. Polisher selection should reflect the degree of irregularity and the instructions for the restoration.
Producing a More Uniform Surface
A sequence of abrasive instruments can progressively refine the surface. Assessing the result throughout the procedure is important for preserving restoration contours and limiting material removal.
Polishing Different Restoration Areas
Instrument shape and dimensions should suit the intended surface, contours and available access. A single shape is not necessarily appropriate for every area.
Features of the Prima Illume 3 Step Zirconia System
Designed for Zirconia Restorations
This range is intended for polishing zirconia restorations. Similarity in appearance to composite or ceramic polishers does not establish equivalent applications.
A Defined Grit Sequence
The three stages organise instrument selection according to the finishing stage. The stage name and grit grade must be checked against the packaging.
A Choice of Connections and Dimensions
The catalogue includes RA versions for compatible contra-angle handpieces and HP versions for compatible straight handpieces. Each version must be selected according to the equipment and intended setting; these connections are not directly interchangeable.
General Specifications

The range of shapes and dimensions reflects the variety within this system and does not indicate that every option is available in stock. The specifications of the selected version must be checked against its packaging and product information.
Use and Maintenance
Before use, inspect the instrument for damage, confirm connection compatibility and ensure that it is correctly seated and securely retained. Operating speed, applied pressure, cooling and the sequence of stages must follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Avoid excessive pressure or prolonged contact in one area. Cleaning, condition checks and sterilization before reuse must also follow the product instructions. Reusability does not imply an unlimited service life.
