Description

What Is a Prima Cylinder Flat End Diamond Bur?

The Prima Cylinder Flat End Diamond Bur has a cylindrical working head with a flat end. Its diamond-coated surface removes and shapes hard tooth tissue through abrasion as the instrument rotates.

Models 835, 836 and 837 belong to Prima’s Cylinder Flat End range. They differ in head diameter and working head length. Selection should therefore reflect the dimensions of the treatment area, access requirements and intended preparation.

The cylindrical sides and flat end allow different parts of the working head to be used during preparation. The resulting contours depend on instrument positioning, direction of movement and the dentist’s technique.

Applications of Cylinder Flat End Diamond Burs

This geometry can be useful for preparing surfaces and walls suited to the instrument’s cylindrical shape and flat end. Selection should be appropriate to the treatment plan and the amount of material removal required.

Removal and Refinement of Hard Tooth Surfaces

The lateral abrasive surface can be used to remove hard tissue and refine surface contours. Head diameter and length influence the contact area, so larger dimensions are not necessarily more suitable for every situation.

Shaping Preparation Walls

The cylindrical shape can be used to form relatively straight walls and surfaces. Alignment of the bur axis and control of instrument movement are important in achieving the intended preparation.

Preparing Areas Requiring Flat-End Geometry

The flat end may be selected for preparing areas where this geometry is appropriate. Maintaining the intended shape and avoiding unwanted removal depend on suitable sizing and controlled movement.

Choosing the Right Cylinder Flat End Diamond Bur

Selecting the Head Diameter

Head diameter should suit the available space and the dimensions of the intended surface. Smaller diameters may be considered for restricted areas, while larger diameters provide a broader potential contact area.

For example, in 836/012, the designation 012 indicates a nominal head diameter of 1.2 mm. This must be considered alongside the model code, head length and grit grade.

Selecting the Working Head Length

One of the main differences between models 835, 836 and 837 is their working head length. Longer heads allow contact along a greater length of the surface, but selection must take account of access and instrument control.

Head length is different from overall bur length. Head length refers to the active abrasive section, while overall length includes both the head and shank.

Selecting the Grit Grade

Grit grade influences abrasive action and the resulting surface finish. Selection should reflect the preparation stage and the specifications of the chosen version.

– Medium: for moderate abrasive action.

– Coarse: for greater material removal where appropriate.

– Extra Coarse: for material removal using larger abrasive particles.

– Fine: for finer surface refinement, where offered.

Specifications of Prima Diamond Burs

The dimensions above are based on Prima’s official Cylinder Flat End product information. Versions with the KR suffix are not included in this table.

The range of sizes and grit grades reflects the variety within this product series and does not mean that every combination is available. The specifications of the selected version should be checked against its packaging and product information.

Handpiece Compatibility and Operating Considerations

Before use, check the shank type, confirm compatibility with the handpiece and inspect the instrument for visible damage. The bur must be fully inserted and securely retained.

Operating speed, cooling and applied pressure must follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements of the procedure. Head diameter, head length and grit grade must also be considered when selecting operating conditions.

Care and Maintenance

Inspect the bur for wear or damage before use. Worn or damaged instruments can impair abrasive performance.

Cleaning and preparation for reuse must follow the instructions for the specific product. Sterilization methods and reusability should not be determined solely by the bur’s material or appearance.
